Celebrated composer duo Salim-Sulaiman Merchant have released Shringaar, the second track from Bhoomi Season 6. Sung by Shankar Mahadevan, the song is a soulful classical pop composition and a heartfelt tribute to the legendary tabla maestro Ustad Zakir Hussain, who passed away in December 2024.
The track beautifully portrays the emotions of a lover who believes his beloved’s natural beauty requires no adornment. Its lyrics- “Kaahe Kare Shringaar Sajaniya, Jag Tope Jaaye Vaar Sajaniya”– capture the essence of timeless beauty, blending simplicity with classical richness.
Salim Merchant recalls that the idea of creating this track with Zakir Hussain and Shankar Mahadevan first came up in October 2024. By November, the melody was ready, but Shankar advised them not to send it to Zakir Hussain as he was unwell. Sadly, on December 15th, the music world lost Zakir Hussain. “For me, it was not just the loss of a musical collaborator—it was the loss of my musical father. Completing this song as a tribute was the only natural thing to do,” Salim shared.
For Shankar Mahadevan, the song carries deep personal meaning. Remembering his long association with Zakir Hussain, he said, “He was a walking encyclopedia. Performing with him taught us not just music but also humility, camaraderie, and positivity. Shringaar is a tribute from me, from Salim-Sulaiman, and from the entire music fraternity. I believe that when this song plays, he will be smiling from above, blessing us all as he always did.”
The making of the track was equally magical. Shankar’s rendition was so spontaneous that it required almost no retakes. “He sang the classical section in one take. It felt like Maa Saraswati herself had blessed the moment. We actually captured Shankar live, something that rarely happens. You have to hear it to believe it,” said Salim.
With Shringaar, Salim-Sulaiman and Shankar Mahadevan not only add another gem to the Bhoomi series, which celebrates India’s musical diversity, but also honour the memory of Ustad Zakir Hussain, whose influence and artistry continue to inspire musicians across the world.
