If you use UPI apps like PhonePe, Google Pay, or Paytm every day, there’s an important update you should know. The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has announced new rules that will change the way UPI works from October 1, 2025.
From this date, the “Collect Request” or “Request Money” feature on UPI will no longer be available. This feature is currently used by people to send payment requests to friends or family, often for splitting bills or reminding someone to pay.
Why is NPCI removing this feature?
The reason is security. According to NPCI, many fraudsters misuse the collect request option. They send fake requests to users, and if someone accepts by mistake, money goes straight out of their account. Removing this feature will help reduce online fraud and protect UPI users.
What will change for users?
- You cannot send or receive “request money” notifications on UPI apps after October 1, 2025.
- Normal UPI features like send money, scan & pay, QR code payments, and merchant payments will continue as usual.
- To ask someone for money, you’ll need to call, text, or directly send your UPI ID, and they can transfer the amount to you.
UPI has become India’s most popular digital payment system with billions of transactions every month. While the collect request was a handy feature, safety comes first. NPCI believes this step will make UPI safer and build more trust among users.
So, from next October, paying or splitting bills might take a few extra seconds, but your money will be more secure.
