Netflix India is stepping into the world of animated mythology with its upcoming series Kurukshetra, an ambitious retelling of the Mahabharata’s legendary war. The show will focus on the decisive 18-day battle of Kurukshetra, presenting the story through the eyes of 18 key warriors. Each character will bring a unique perspective, grappling with moral conflicts, personal struggles, and the painful realities of a war fought between brothers.
Created by Anu Sikka and directed by Ujaan Ganguly, the series promises to deliver a fresh lens on the ancient epic. Instead of following a single hero, Kurukshetra adopts an ensemble approach, giving equal weight to multiple warriors whose choices shaped the outcome of the great war. This makes the storytelling more layered, emotional, and relevant to modern audiences.
The project boasts a powerful creative team. Celebrated lyricist and poet Gulzar has penned lyrics for the show, adding depth and poetry to its soundtrack. The production is led by Anu Sikka, Alok Jain, and Ajit Andhare under the Tipping Point Films banner, ensuring a high-quality execution that blends animation with storytelling grandeur.
The series will be released in two parts, with each part featuring nine episodes, making a total of 18 episodes. Kurukshetra is scheduled to premiere on October 10, 2025, exclusively on Netflix.
This marks Netflix India’s first-ever animated mythological series, underscoring the platform’s push into Indian cultural storytelling. By reimagining the Mahabharata in a visually rich, animated format, the series aims to connect with younger viewers while also engaging audiences familiar with the timeless tale. With its blend of moral dilemmas, familial drama, and epic battle sequences, Kurukshetra is expected to be one of the most significant mythological adaptations in recent times.
