Giorgio Armani Passes Away at 91: Italian Fashion Legend Remembered for His Timeless Elegance and India Connection

The fashion world is mourning the death of Giorgio Armani, the legendary Italian designer who shaped modern luxury style. Armani, known for his minimalist tailoring and red-carpet masterpieces, passed away in Milan at the age of 91.

The Armani Group announced that a funeral chamber will be open at the Armani/Teatro in Milan on September 6 and 7 for fans and admirers to pay their respects. A private funeral ceremony will follow at a later date, in line with Armani’s wish for simplicity.

Giorgio Armani’s India Connection

Armani’s influence reached far beyond Europe. His 1994 visit to India had a lasting impact on his creative vision. Inspired by Indian textiles and traditional menswear, Armani later introduced a capsule collection inspired by the achkan in 2019, blending Indian silhouettes with his signature Milanese elegance.

Bollywood Stars Who Wore Armani

Armani was a favourite among Bollywood celebrities, many of whom showcased his designs on global platforms:

  • Aishwarya Rai Bachchan – personally invited to Milan by Armani in 2015 for his fashion house’s 40th anniversary.
  • Sonam Kapoor – frequently spotted in Armani couture at international film festivals.
  • Priyanka Chopra Jonas – wore Armani gowns at several Hollywood red carpets.
  • Alia Bhatt – stunned at Cannes 2025 in a custom Armani Privé gown.
  • Kareena Kapoor Khan – wore a bold Armani gown at IIFA 2014.
  • Shahid Kapoor – chose Armani’s “Made to Measure” service for a bespoke suit.

These appearances strengthened Armani’s presence in India, making him one of the most celebrated international designers in Bollywood.

Giorgio Armani was more than just a fashion designer – he was a cultural force. Known as the pioneer of “soft tailoring”, Armani transformed men’s suits into symbols of power and elegance while redefining women’s red-carpet fashion. His designs were worn by stars such as Richard Gere, Leonardo DiCaprio, Julia Roberts – and across India, by Bollywood’s biggest names.

Armani’s passing marks the end of an era in global fashion. His legacy will live on through the timeless elegance of his designs and his influence on generations of designers, celebrities, and fashion lovers worldwide.

For India, Armani will always be remembered as the designer who admired its artistry, incorporated its traditions into his work, and dressed its stars on the world stage.
