In a major update for Indian cinema’s most ambitious sci-fi franchise, Vyjayanthi Movies has confirmed that Deepika Padukone will not be a part of the Kalki 2898 AD sequel. The production house issued an official statement on X (formerly Twitter), stating that the decision was taken after “careful consideration” and stressing that a film of this scale “deserves commitment and much more.”
The post read:
“This is to officially announce that Deepika Padukone will not be a part of the upcoming sequel of Kalki 2898 AD. After careful consideration, we have decided to part ways. Despite the long journey of making the first film, we were unable to find a partnership. And a film like Kalki 2898 AD deserves that commitment and much more. We wish her the best with her future works.”
The makers did not elaborate on the reasons, but their emphasis on “partnership” and “commitment” suggests scheduling or creative differences may have played a role.
In the first installment, released earlier this year, Deepika played Sumathi (SUM-80), a pivotal character whose arc was tied to the futuristic-mythological narrative. Her performance was widely appreciated, and fans had expected her to reprise the role in the sequel.
The news comes close on the heels of reports that Padukone also stepped away from another big-ticket project, Spirit, sparking conversations about workload, commitments, and evolving career choices for top stars. While Deepika has yet to comment publicly, social media is buzzing with mixed reactions – from disappointment among fans to curiosity about who will step into the role next.
Directed by Nag Ashwin and starring Prabhas, Amitabh Bachchan, and Kamal Haasan, Kalki 2898 AD was one of 2025’s biggest releases, praised for its visual ambition and unique blend of mythology and science fiction. The sequel is expected to expand the universe further, and with Deepika’s exit, the makers will either recast her role or reimagine the storyline.
Regardless, the development has only added to the buzz surrounding the sequel, which is slated to go on floors later this year.
