Gandhi Jayanti- 5 Inspiring Films That Brought Mahatma Gandhi’s Legacy to the Big Screen

Mahatma Gandhi’s philosophy of truth, non-violence, and simplicity has left an indelible mark not just on India but across the world. Over the decades, filmmakers have tried to capture the essence of the Father of the Nation through cinema—bringing his life, struggles, and teachings to global audiences. On the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti, here are five inspiring films that portray his extraordinary journey.

Gandhi (1982)

Directed by Richard Attenborough, Gandhi remains the most celebrated cinematic portrayal of Mahatma Gandhi’s life. Released on 30 November 1982, the film stars Ben Kingsley as Gandhi, Rohini Hattangadi as Kasturba Gandhi, Roshan Seth as Pandit Nehru, and features Candice Bergen and Edward Fox in key roles. The storyline traces Gandhi’s transformation from a young lawyer in South Africa to the leader of India’s non-violent independence movement. It covers defining events like the Salt March, Quit India Movement, and his assassination. The film was a global success, winning eight Academy Awards including Best Picture, Best Actor for Kingsley, and Best Director for Attenborough, cementing its place in cinematic history.

The Making of the Mahatma (1996)

Shyam Benegal’s The Making of the Mahatma, released in 1996, focuses on Gandhi’s 21 years in South Africa, a period that shaped his philosophy of Satyagraha. Starring Rajit Kapur as Gandhi and Pallavi Joshi as Kasturba Gandhi, the film is based on Fatima Meer’s book The Apprenticeship of a Mahatma. It portrays Gandhi’s evolution from a hesitant barrister to a fearless leader who pioneered non-violent resistance. Rajit Kapur’s performance earned him the National Film Award for Best Actor, and the film itself was praised for its historical authenticity and depth.

Gandhi, My Father (2007)

Released on 3 August 2007, Gandhi, My Father is directed by Feroz Abbas Khan and produced by Anil Kapoor. The film stars Darshan Jariwala as Mahatma Gandhi, Akshaye Khanna as Harilal Gandhi, Shefali Shah as Kasturba Gandhi, and Bhumika Chawla as Gulab Gandhi. Unlike traditional biopics, the storyline delves into the strained relationship between Gandhi and his eldest son Harilal, who struggled to live under the shadow of his father’s towering moral authority. The film explores the contrast between Gandhi’s public role as the Mahatma and his personal role as a father, offering a moving and humanized portrait. Darshan Jariwala’s performance won him the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actor.

Hey Ram (2000)

Kamal Haasan’s Hey Ram, released on 18 February 2000, is a powerful fictional narrative set against the backdrop of Partition. Directed by and starring Kamal Haasan as Saket Ram, the film features Naseeruddin Shah as Mahatma Gandhi, along with Shah Rukh Khan, Rani Mukerji, and Hema Malini in pivotal roles. The story follows Saket Ram, a man devastated by communal violence, who initially blames Gandhi for India’s turmoil and plots against him. However, his encounters with Gandhi gradually change his perception, leading to a powerful climax around the Mahatma’s assassination. The film received critical acclaim for its bold storytelling, layered characters, and Naseeruddin Shah’s convincing portrayal of Gandhi.

Lage Raho Munna Bhai (2006)

Rajkumar Hirani’s Lage Raho Munna Bhai, released on 1 September 2006, is not a biopic but a refreshing modern tribute to Gandhi’s ideals. The film stars Sanjay Dutt as Munna Bhai, Arshad Warsi as Circuit, Vidya Balan, Boman Irani, and Dilip Prabhavalkar as Mahatma Gandhi. The storyline follows Munna Bhai, a lovable goon, who begins to see Gandhi’s spirit and applies his principles of truth and non-violence to solve everyday problems. Blending humor with philosophy, the film introduced the concept of Gandhigiri, which quickly entered popular culture. It became a massive box-office hit and won several Filmfare Awards, including Best Film (Critics) and Best Screenplay.

From grand historical epics like Gandhi to contemporary interpretations like Lage Raho Munna Bhai, these films showcase different facets of Mahatma Gandhi’s life and philosophy. They continue to inspire audiences, reminding us that his timeless message of peace and non-violence remains as relevant today as it was during India’s struggle for freedom.
